Tips To Limit Distractions

  • Environmental factors and recurrent noise can negatively impact productivity. If noise is a factor for you, try some noise-canceling headphones to drown it out or play some white noise. Ear plugs can help muffle noises.

  • Pay attention to your energy levels so you can take breaks to maintain your focus and reduce the chance of distractions. Do your most important work during your high-energy times. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, exercising, and maintaining a good diet so you’ll feel your best.

  • A timer may be helpful in getting you to focus for set blocks of time. Use a timer that makes noise. Set it for 20 minutes and don’t do anything except that task until the timer goes off.

  • Make a to-do list then prioritize it based on importance, deadlines, and profitability. This way, you’ll be putting your best effort and energy into the most important and profitable items first. Then what’s left over can be handled if there is time and energy left. See how to create and prioritize your to-do list here.

  • Complete the tasks you start. Keep a running list of tasks and projects so you know what’s due next and break them down into smaller pieces to get them done easier. You may even want to set a deadline for each piece.

  • Keep interruptions to a minimum. Not every call, email, or text needs to be answered immediately. Let calls go to voicemail and close your email program when you’re trying to be productive. Learn to manage chatty coworkers. If you need to, go into a closed office to really concentrate or work on sensitive issues. If you work at home, explain to your friends and family what you do, and ask them to limit the interruptions.

  • Turn off the technology. You don’t have to be electronically available 24/7. For your own sanity and respect for your loved ones, unplug during your downtime and be fully present in whatever you’re doing.

  • Identify your biggest distractions, whether it’s television, social media, computer games, or talking on the phone, and get a handle on them. You don’t have to cut them out completely but set some rules on how often you’ll indulge.

  • Have a place where you can capture random thoughts as they come up. You can use a planner, a notebook, a notepad, or an app. When you think of something that needs to be done besides what you’re currently working on, record it in your capture tool and go right back to what you were working on. When you finish the task at hand, you can re-prioritize if necessary.

  • Not sure where your time is going?  Track your time and tasks for a few days and find out once and for all.

You can’t get your work done if you’re distracted. Learn to limit low-priority tasks competing for your attention and fine-tune your focus.

You’ll be surprised at how much you can get done and how much time you’ll have to spend on what’s truly important.
