I haven’t always been a positive person. I wasn’t raised in an abundantly positive home environment. It is something I’ve had to learn and work on.

I’ve had many lessons and teachers. I’ve learned to be happy even for the little things. I’ve learned to be thankful even in the midst of turmoil. It isn’t always easy. But I’ve decided it is better than the alternative — to be unhappy.

I have decided that life is too short to be unhappy. That I should dance when I hear music. That I should laugh out loud when something is funny. That I should be thankful for what I have instead of sorry for things I don’t have.

I’ve learned to appreciate people in my life that bring me joy and to avoid those that drain me of joy. To not live in fear, but to take risks. To step out in faith, instead of being paralyzed by fear. To believe in myself and trust in God.

I’ve learned the power of positive thinking. And it has changed who I am. Not that I don’t have bad days. But I don’t dwell in my unhappiness anymore and my bad days turn around much more quickly.

Your thoughts affect your mental attitude

Tiger Woods wrote “The road to failure is paved with negativity,” in How I Play Golf . “If you think you can’t do something, chances are you won’t be able to. The power of positive thinking can turn an adverse situation into a prime opportunity for heroism.”

Your thoughts can propel you forward or drag you backward. Your mind, your mood, your attitudes are all connected to your thoughts. The best news about optimism is that it is a learnable quality.

You CAN learn to be a more confident and optimistic person and have a more positive attitude by thinking the way optimists do – most of the time.

The positive psychology movement has taught us that thinking optimistically has a dramatic effect on our moods. A positive mood will raise your energy level, give power to your words, and boost your professional presence.

Using positive language when talking to yourself, releases powerful endorphins in your brain. By thinking more uplifting thoughts, your energy will soar and your colleagues and customers will notice.

Do this when you’re attitude is negative

A negative attitude and mindset will cause you to self-sabotage your own success. You don’t have to be a slave to stinkin-thinkin and agree with everything that pops into your head.

The next time you perceive that something bad is happening, instead of reacting with anger, frustration or fear, ask yourself the following questions:

• What is the gift in this situation?
• What are the opportunities here?
• What can I learn from it?
• What do I have to be thankful for? Focus on the good that is already in your life.
• What am I good at and what have I done well? Use self-affirmations.
• What can I do now? If the moment has passed, accept it and move on!

Your success, health, happiness, and wealth depend on how you make up your mind! A positive attitude will naturally attract the good and the beautiful towards you. The negative attitude will rob you of all that makes life worth living.
