You know what needs to be done.  It’s obvious when you look around you.  You must get started but lack the motivation.

How do you increase your motivation to be successful? Let’s answer a few other questions first…

What is motivation?

The dictionary defines motivation as something that causes a person to act or a method to provide a motive.  Motivation comes in many different forms.  Some you may recognize and some you may not.  Some synonyms for motivation are inspiration, incentive, purpose, and enthusiasm.

Why motivation is important

Success can’t be achieved without motivation.  Goals are the stepping-stones toward your success. To achieve them, you’ll need the motivation to keep moving towards them.

Motivation is what turns a good idea into immediate action to achieve. It can positively impact the world around you. Without motivation, you can’t achieve anything. There are no goals and no purpose to work for.

With a daily dose of motivation, you can be inspired to continue forward momentum until your goal is reached.  Motivation allows you to maintain focus on your tasks.

Types of motivation

Intrinsic motivation comes from inside a person rather than from an external source.  It comes from the sheer pleasure and satisfaction of working on a task and its completion.  It doesn’t matter if there are no rewards.

If a person is intrinsically motivated, he works on a project simply because it’s enjoyable.  He works and enjoys the journey not necessarily the destination.  The work is not done for payment or reward.

Extrinsic motivation is the most common form of motivation and comes from an external source. When we experience extrinsic motivation, we expect to be rewarded.

The motivating factors come externally in the form of rewards such as money or an award.  It’s the reward that provides satisfaction from completing the task.

Now let’s talk about you…

What motivates you?

Motivation can be as diverse as people themselves.  What motivates you may be totally opposite to what motivates others.

What is the source of your motivation?  Where can you turn for the inspiration that will propel you forward?  We’re all different and are all motivated differently.

It’s true that some people were born with a distinctive quality of motivation.  But learning to increase your motivation is a vital skill that can be taught and learned. Find ways to increase your motivation that works for you.

To experiment, give one of these a try…

Techniques to Increase Your Motivation

  • Visualization.  Never lose sight of your ultimate goal.  See yourself achieving your goal and having what you desire. Know you’re going to get what you deserve and push forward with renewed motivation.  You know that success is not just an option but is a real fact.  See it and believe it.
  • Preparation feeds motivation.  Motivation without the skills to achieve your goals is not enough. If you know you’re lacking something to move forward motivation is hard to activate.  Motivation is fueled by knowledge followed closely by persistence.
  • Change your environment.  New surroundings often give you a renewed outlook on your life.  It can be something simple.  Put a new plant in your home or office, hang a new picture, or open the curtains and let in the light.
  • Surround yourself with positive people.  When you’re around positive and successful friends their attitude rubs off on you.  You absorb their energy.  On the other hand, when you’re with negative people, you absorb that energy as well.
  • Do something for others.  When we do for others, we find motivation within ourselves.  Many times, the way to achieve your goal is to assist others in reaching theirs.  Serve others and you’ll become energized and motivated when they rely on you.  Disappoint them and you disappoint yourself.
  • Talking or reading aloud to yourself.  Always keep an inspirational book handy. When you hear positive affirmations, they become more effective. Repeat positive affirmations out loud throughout your day.
  • Brainstorming.  Try to think of as many ways as possible to achieve what you’d like. Using your brain in different ways will stimulate it and stimulation leads to motivation.
  • Use motivational quotes to keep you going.

Equally important, it’s easy to be motivated when something is new and harder to stay motivated when the excitement wears off. This is perfectly normal. Motivation comes from many sources and you must find what works for you.

Believe in yourself.  Appreciate and anticipate the good in your life and the good to come.  Never fear the bad or unknown.  Recommit to your vision every day. Do this and you’ll be able to increase your motivation.
